I have been thinking about adding Dumas to the Classics Challenge, and I might have to try the Pevear translation. My favorite novel of all novels is The Brothers Karamazov in the Pevear and Volokhonsky translation. Richard Pevear and Larissa Volokhonsky's translation gives us new access to the spirit and order of the book. I bought the Pevear/Volokhonsky translation for the Kindle because my ancient Penguin copy has a small font that's tiring on the eyes. Somewhere in there Deirdre gave me the new 3.8 pound Richard Pevear / Larissa Volokhonsky translation of War and Peace that everybody is raving about. I am about 1000 or so pages into the recent, Pevear-Volokhonsky translation of War and Peace. I've since read the Pevear/Volokhonsky translations of Anna Karenina and War and Peace, and have their translation of The Brothers Karamazov sitting on my to-be-read shelf. But, when it comes to Tolstoi I really, really like the translations by Richard Pevear and Larissa Volokhonsky (they did the War & Peace I'm working on). I'm curious as to why the other bloggers you follow(ed) weren't pleased with the translation. Talk about getting your money's worth. James Wood reviews the new translation of War and Peace in The New Yorker. Richard Pevear and Larissa Volokhonsky, who have also translated War and Peace and Anna Karenina, are behind this new version of Boris Pasternak's breathtakingly wonderful novel. Fortunately, conversations with a friend and some online sleuthing of pages 823 to 825 of the Pevear and Volokhonsky translation revealed to me the French army, battered, bleeding and hiding in Moscow. I tried this novel many times in other I hope they're at work on War and Peace. As Theophrastus notes (and quotes from), Orlando Figes reviewed the Pevear-Volokhonsky translation of War and Peace in November 2007.
